Root Shadow and Money Piece: Two Separate Colour Decisions
A reference photo can contain two ideas that are easy to confuse: deeper colour near the roots and brighter pieces around the face. A root shadow and a money piece describe different parts of that picture. They can be used together, or you can choose one without the other. Discussing them separately makes a colour consultation much clearer.
First decide what you want to notice
A root shadow describes a darker-looking area near the roots that blends into lighter lengths. A money piece describes a brighter section framing the face. The first concerns the transition from scalp to length; the second concerns where your eye goes when you look at the front of the hairstyle. Neither term, by itself, tells a stylist how dramatic the final result should be.
Start by pointing to your favourite feature in a photograph. Is it the soft change near the parting, the bright strand beside the cheek, or the overall mix of dark and light? If you simply ask for the name of the technique, you may leave those more useful details unsaid.
Describe the root area in ordinary language
Look at your hair in its usual parting. Think about whether you enjoy seeing your natural depth near the scalp, and how you feel when lighter lengths begin below it. Some people like that separation; others feel it makes their roots look too dark. There is no universally correct preference.
- Show how far down the darker area looks comfortable to you.
- Explain whether you want a gradual blend or a clearly visible contrast.
- Say whether visible grey at the root is part of the look you want to keep or something you want to discuss separately.
- Mention whether you change your parting, because the most visible root area moves with it.
A soft-looking root in a photograph does not automatically mean little future maintenance. Existing colour, your preferred tone and how much regrowth you tolerate all matter. Ask what would need refreshing and what could simply be allowed to grow.
Choose the width and brightness at the front
For the face-framing section, compare a fine ribbon with a broad panel. A narrow piece can read as a small accent; a broad, light section can become the main feature of your hair. Also compare the lightness of that section with the hair behind it. Width and contrast work together, so “just a small money piece” is not a complete brief.
Check the idea with your fringe, glasses and favourite hairstyle. Hair pulled behind the ears can expose colour that looks understated when it falls forward. A front-facing reference is useful, but a side view helps explain what you want along the hairline.
Try this two-part consultation brief
For example: “I like a darker root that fades gradually into brown lengths. Around my face, I want a fine highlight that is noticeable in daylight, but I do not want a pale, solid panel.” That gives the stylist two separate decisions to work with. Bring another image showing a root transition or front section you dislike, and label the exact feature.
If you are undecided, rank your priorities: softer regrowth, a brighter front view, less overall lightening, or a more dramatic change. Those priorities may point towards different placement choices. The stylist still needs to assess your current hair before recommending a method or confirming what can be achieved.
