Keratin vs rebonding vs cysteine: the honest difference
These three sit on a spectrum from gentle to permanent. Knowing where each one falls is the most useful thing you can learn before booking.
Keratin treatment / hair smoothing
A keratin treatment is semi-permanent. It infuses the hair with smoothing proteins to reduce frizz, add shine and cut down blow-dry time, while still keeping your hair's natural movement and a hint of wave. It softens texture rather than forcing the hair dead straight, and washes out gradually over a few months.
Rebonding
Rebonding is the most permanent and straightest option. It chemically breaks and re-forms the bonds in your hair so it stays poker-straight until it grows out. As new hair grows you will eventually see a line between straight lengths and natural roots.
Cysteine treatment
A cysteine treatment is a gentler smoothing option using the amino acid cysteine instead of harsher actives. It is a milder, more natural-finish choice, though results are typically subtler and shorter-lasting than a standard keratin treatment.
Which one suits you?
There is no single best treatment, only the best treatment for your hair and your lifestyle. Here is roughly who each one suits.
- Choose keratin / smoothing if you want frizz gone and easier styling but still want body, movement and the option to wear waves. Great for wavy-to-frizzy hair that you do not want bone-straight.
- Choose rebonding if your goal is genuinely sleek, straight hair every day and you are happy to maintain regrowth over time. Best for thick, coarse or strongly wavy hair that resists straightening.
- Choose cysteine if you want a softer, more natural smoothing with a gentler formulation, or if your hair is finer and you do not want a heavy result.
Not sure? That is exactly what a consultation is for. Founder and lead stylist Jamie and the team will look at your actual hair, ask how you style it day to day, and recommend honestly, even if that means a gentler treatment than you walked in asking for. You can see our full women's salon services or browse the wider treatments menu first.
The Singapore humidity & frizz angle
Singapore's climate is uniquely tough on hair. High, year-round humidity swells the hair shaft and lifts the cuticle, which is what turns a smooth morning into an afternoon of frizz and flyaways. Wavy and curly textures feel it most.
That is why frizz treatments are so popular here: they help the cuticle stay sealed even when the air is heavy with moisture. A keratin treatment is often the sweet spot, it tames frizz and shortens styling time without committing you to dead-straight hair.
If you also colour your hair, humidity and chemical services compound each other, so aftercare matters even more. Our guide on caring for your hair in Singapore's climate is worth a read, and you can pair smoothing with our colour services when timed correctly.
The process & how long each lasts
Every smoothing service starts the same way: an honest look at your hair's condition. From there the steps and timing differ.
Keratin / smoothing
Typically a wash, application of the smoothing formula, processing time, then sealing with heat. Expect a few hours in the chair depending on length and thickness. Results usually last around three to five months, fading gradually rather than leaving a hard regrowth line.
Rebonding
A longer, two-stage chemical process that breaks then re-bonds the hair, followed by flat-ironing and a neutraliser. Because it is permanent, it lasts until the treated hair grows out, and you will likely want root touch-ups as new growth appears.
Cysteine
Similar in flow but with a gentler active. Results are softer and generally shorter-lived than standard keratin. Curious about the longer-lasting option? Our ultimate guide to keratin treatments in Singapore goes deeper.
Hair health & our honesty policy
Smoothing and straightening are chemical services, and we treat them with respect. The most important promise we can make is this: we will not over-process hair that is not in a fit state for it.
If your hair is already heavily bleached, very dry, breaking, or recently chemically treated, piling on a strong rebonding or keratin service can do real damage. In those cases we will tell you honestly, whether that means choosing the gentler cysteine route, or some conditioning and scalp care first and smoothing later when your hair can handle it.
For stressed hair we may suggest building strength back first, for example with a head spa or scalp treatment, before any chemical service. Healthy hair holds a smooth result better and for longer, so this is not a delay tactic, it is how you get a result that lasts.
Aftercare for lasting results
What you do after your appointment makes a huge difference, especially with keratin and cysteine treatments.
The first 48-72 hours
This is the critical window while the treatment fully sets. As a general rule for keratin-style smoothing, keep hair dry, loose and unclipped, avoid washing, tying it up tightly, or anything that kinks the hair. We will give you exact instructions for your specific treatment at the chair.
Ongoing care
- Switch to a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner, sulphates strip smoothing treatments out faster.
- Use a heat protectant before styling, and go easy on very hot tools.
- In our humidity, a lightweight smoothing or anti-frizz product helps the result hold between washes.

How to choose, and how to book
If you take one thing away: rebonding is for permanent, dead-straight hair; keratin and smoothing are for frizz control with movement; cysteine is the gentlest of the smoothing family. The best choice depends on your hair's condition and how you like to wear it.
If you love the idea of body and texture rather than straightening, you might also be weighing up a perm, the opposite end of the same conversation. We are one of Orchard's well-reviewed salons, and we would rather guide you to the right service than the wrong one.
The simplest next step is a quick consultation so we can see your hair in person and give you an honest recommendation and quote. Contact His & Her Hairloft to book, we are at 360 Orchard Rd, #01-15 International Building, just off Orchard MRT.
Frequently asked questions
Keratin or rebonding, which should I get?
If you want permanently straight, sleek hair, rebonding is the answer. If you want frizz gone but still want movement and the option of waves, choose a keratin treatment or smoothing. We will recommend honestly in person based on your hair.
How long does a keratin treatment last?
Keratin treatments are semi-permanent and usually last around three to five months, fading out gradually. Cysteine results are softer and shorter-lived, while rebonding is permanent and lasts until the treated hair grows out.
Will smoothing or rebonding damage my hair?
These are chemical services, so they must be done carefully. We will not over-process hair that is already very dry, bleached or breaking, and we will recommend a gentler option or some conditioning first if that is what your hair needs.
Can I do keratin or rebonding on coloured hair?
Often yes, but it depends on your hair's condition and how recently it was coloured or bleached. The timing and sequence of colour and smoothing matter, so we assess your hair in person before advising.
How do I keep my smoothing result looking good in Singapore's humidity?
Use a sulphate-free shampoo, a heat protectant, and a light anti-frizz product, and follow the first 48-72 hour aftercare for keratin-style treatments. Our climate aftercare guide has the full routine.
How much does keratin treatment or rebonding cost in Singapore?
Pricing varies with your hair's length, thickness and the exact treatment chosen, so we give an accurate quote after seeing your hair. We sit in the mid-premium band ($$). Contact us for a quote.
Who does your smoothing treatment
Chemical services here are handled by our most experienced stylists. Wei Ling and Jamie each have over 20 years behind the chair and both work across men's and women's hair including chemical work, so your keratin, rebonding or cysteine treatment is assessed and carried out by the same person throughout.
