The hair colour services we offer
Whether you want a subtle refresh or a full transformation, there's a service that fits. Here's what we do at our Orchard salon:
- Balayage — hand-painted, sun-kissed colour with a soft grow-out and very little visible regrowth. Low-maintenance and natural-looking.
- Highlights / foils — fine, precise lightening woven through sections for brightness, depth and dimension. More structured than balayage.
- Full / global colour — a single, even shade from root to tip, perfect for going darker, richer or covering grey all over.
- Root touch-up — colours only the regrowth so your overall look stays consistent between full appointments.
- Grey coverage & grey blending — full opaque coverage, or a softer blend that lets grey grow out gracefully.
- Ash, cool & fashion tones — ash brown, smoky blonde, soft copper and bolder creative shades.
- Men's colour — natural grey coverage or subtle blending for beards and hair.
- Colour correction — fixing uneven, brassy or over-processed colour from a previous salon or home kit.
Not sure which one you need? Our balayage vs highlights guide breaks down the difference, and a quick consultation settles it.
How to choose the right service for your goal and lifestyle
The best colour for you isn't about a trend — it's about how it fits your life. We start with two questions: what look do you want, and how often can you realistically come back?
If you want low maintenance
Balayage is your friend. Because the colour starts away from the root, you can stretch four to five months between visits without a harsh line.
If you want brightness and impact
Highlights or a full colour give a bolder, more uniform result, but expect a root touch-up roughly every six to eight weeks as your base grows in.
If you're mainly covering grey
Full or root colour gives the most complete coverage; grey blending is gentler and lower-upkeep if you're open to a softer result. We'll be honest about which suits your grey percentage.
We treat colour as part of your overall hair health — if your hair is dry or over-processed, we may suggest pairing it with a service from our hair treatments menu first.
The Singapore problem: humidity, hard water and brassiness
Here's something most salons won't tell you upfront: Singapore's climate is hard on coloured hair. Constant humidity, year-round UV, chlorinated pools and the city's hard water all speed up how quickly colour fades and turns warm. That orange or yellow 'brassy' tinge a few weeks after a fresh colour? That's the local environment at work, not bad colouring.
The good news is it's manageable. Here's how we keep your tone true:
- Toners and glosses — applied at your appointment and refreshed periodically to neutralise unwanted warmth and add shine.
- Purple / blue shampoo at home — counters yellow and orange between visits when used correctly (over-use can dull hair, so we'll guide you).
- Gentler washing — colour-safe, sulphate-free products and cooler water slow fade-out.
We go deeper on day-to-day upkeep in our guide on caring for coloured hair in Singapore's climate. Pairing colour with a head spa also keeps the scalp and hair healthy enough to hold tone better.
Your consultation and patch test
Every colour service starts with a proper consultation — it's the difference between a result you love and one you tolerate. Before any colour is mixed, we'll:
- Look at your natural base, condition and any previous colour or chemical history (perms, rebonding, henna or home dye all affect the outcome).
- Talk through the shade you want, set realistic expectations, and flag if it'll take more than one session.
- Agree on maintenance and a rough timeline before you commit.
For anyone new to colour or with sensitive skin, we recommend a patch test at least 48 hours beforehand to check for any reaction. It's a small step that protects you. If your hair has been chemically treated, we'll also assess whether it can take the colour safely or needs a strengthening treatment first. To book, message us on WhatsApp or call the salon and we'll find a time.
Maintenance and aftercare at home
What you do between appointments decides how long your colour lasts. A few simple habits go a long way in our climate:
- Wait before washing — leave fresh colour for 24–48 hours before the first wash so it sets.
- Use colour-safe, sulphate-free shampoo — harsh cleansers strip pigment fast.
- Wash less, rinse cooler — hot water and daily washing accelerate fade. Our guide on how often to wash in Singapore's climate helps you find the right balance.
- Protect from sun and chlorine — a hat or UV-protectant spray, and rinse after the pool.
- Tone and treat — a periodic gloss or bonding treatment keeps colour shiny and strong.
We'll send you off with product and routine advice tailored to your exact shade so the upkeep is realistic, not a chore.
Men's colour and grey blending
Colour isn't just for the women's chair. Plenty of our male clients come in to deal with grey — and the goal is almost always the same: look refreshed, not obviously 'dyed'. We're a barber and a salon under one roof in Orchard, so men's colour sits naturally alongside a cut and fade.
Grey blending vs full coverage
Grey blending is the popular choice for men — it softens and reduces grey rather than blocking it out, leaving a natural salt-and-pepper finish that grows out without an obvious line. It's quick, low-commitment and looks intentional.
Full grey coverage gives a uniform, younger-looking result if you'd prefer to remove the grey entirely; it does need topping up every few weeks as roots grow in. We can also blend grey through beards. If you're weighing up your options, our guide to covering grey hair in Singapore walks through what to expect.
Who our colour service is for
Our colour chair suits a wide range of people, including:
- Anyone wanting their first balayage or highlights and a low-maintenance, natural finish.
- People covering or blending grey — women and men alike.
- Clients chasing a specific cool or ash tone that keeps turning brassy elsewhere.
- Anyone needing colour correction after a home kit or an unhappy salon visit.
- Brides, ROM couples and festive-season clients wanting fresh, photo-ready colour for the big day or Chinese New Year.
As one of Orchard's well-reviewed salons — a short walk from Orchard MRT at International Building — we colour for everyday looks and special occasions alike. Browse the rest of what we do on our women's salon page, or just come in for a chat about your colour.
Frequently asked questions
How long does hair colour last in Singapore's climate?
Most colour holds well for six to eight weeks before roots show, but the tone can start fading or going brassy sooner because of our humidity, sun and hard water. Using colour-safe products and a periodic toner or gloss noticeably extends how long it looks fresh.
Will colouring damage my hair?
Any colour involves some chemical process, but done correctly with the right formula and condition checks it's safe for most hair. We assess your hair first, may recommend a strengthening treatment, and avoid over-processing — especially on hair that's been permed or rebonded.
What's the difference between balayage and highlights?
Balayage is hand-painted for a soft, natural, low-maintenance grow-out with little visible regrowth. Highlights are foiled in fine, structured sections for more brightness and uniform dimension. Balayage needs fewer touch-ups; highlights give more impact.
How do I stop my colour going brassy?
Brassiness comes from warmth showing through as colour fades — common in Singapore's climate. We control it with toners and glosses at the salon, and at home a colour-safe routine plus the correct use of purple or blue shampoo keeps unwanted yellow and orange at bay.
Can you cover 100% grey hair?
Yes. A full or root colour can give complete, opaque grey coverage. If you'd prefer something lower-maintenance, grey blending softens and reduces grey for a natural salt-and-pepper look instead. We'll recommend the right option for your grey percentage at the consultation.
Do you do men's hair colour?
Yes — we colour for men too, mainly grey coverage and grey blending for hair and beards. Blending is the popular low-commitment choice; full coverage is available if you want to remove grey entirely. It pairs easily with a cut at our Orchard barber.
How much does hair colour cost?
Pricing varies by your hair length, the service and how much work is involved, so we quote after seeing your hair. We're a mid-premium ($$) salon — message or call us on +65 8335 1511 for an honest quote before you book.
